Chestnut Hill College, The Commonwealth Chateau | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Part of a large property purchase made by Chestnut Hill College in 2008 to handle increased enrollment, the home was originally a privately owned estate built in 1925, modernized in the 1950s, and converted into a conference center by Temple University in 1969. VMA worked with Chestnut Hill in two phases; first to transform a guest lodge into a student dormitory, and second to renovate the mansion into classrooms and dining hall, with the ability to host special events. The most symbolic improvement to the mansion was the reconstruction of main facade back into its original 1920s appearance. Work on the interior involved rethinking the configuration of major spaces while improving circulation. Additionally, historic finishes were preserved and restored to retain the character and the history of the building, with new finishes complementing the existing features of the space.
