The Barn Student Center, Millbrook School | Millbrook, New York
Student social spaces are fundamental to providing a balanced boarding school experience and the LEED Gold Certified Barn offers many opportunities for students to interact informally. Equally important is accessible, yet inconspicuous adult supervision. This renovation resolves these issues by placing key functions such as college advising and a snack bar transparently within view of a café and student lounge. Student counseling is discreetly located in proximity to game rooms, and student activity space in a way that maintains students’ privacy while providing accessible support. The spatial organization coupled with the transparency of the interior allows students to develop confidence and schools to live up to their in loco parentis mandate.
