Millbrook School, The Barn Student Center | Millbrook, New York
The Barn was renovated into a student center that incorporates the history and spirit of the school with the vibrancy and durability that a student center demands. Furnishings were selected to recall the Barn’s history. Seating in the first floor café pays homage to the building’s 1930s Milk Bar, a student-run soda fountain. Stools and booths around the café perimeter reference the originals. The center of the café features the Navy 111 Chair, a modern take on Emeco’s iconic 1940 Navy Chair. The chair is visually consistent with the booths and ribbed table edges, and functionally appropriate for a high traffic area. This fully recycled chair and many other sustainable features of this project are a testament to Millbrook’s commitment to stewardship of the environment. Industrial style wall-mounted light fixtures and large goose-neck extensions also reference the early-mid century. Even the artwork, a mix of photographs from the school’s history and paintings by the school’s favorite art faculty, is uniquely Millbrook.
