Swarthmore Campus | Swarthmore, Pennslyvania
Faced with the challenge of updating their campus to meet ADA standards, the College turned to VMA to elegantly integrate access across campus. In conjunction, the design team assembled a sweeping set of campus standards and a materials palette to facilitate a consistent visual language across campus. Circulation routes were examined, leading to the planning and design of walkways, roads, and plazas to provide accessible routes and highlight prominent landscape features of the Swarthmore campus like the iconic Amphitheater. A notable feature of the upgrades included a concealed fire access lane leading to Parrish Hall, the focal point of campus, covered in recycled flagstone and bluestone. The end result was a graceful, beautiful, yet utilitarian avenue leading through campus.
