Every space at LeBow College of Business works to capture the most potential for a collaborative and supportive environment for the entire school community. The Forum is an expansive double-height atrium, designed to maintain a constant flow of circulation and activity. It's a space for lectures and events as well as an informal gathering and study space. The building’s corridors are populated with informal breakout spaces outfitted with comfortable seating in fun colors where students can work or socialize outside of class.

In reimagining what a 21st-century school of business could be, the Lehigh University College of Business has developed a new facility that will bring discovery-based learning environments to their undergraduate, graduate, and executive education programs. A communal space for the Vistex Institute for Executive Learning & Research includes a terrace.

The design of this new academic building at The Pennington School was conceived to challenge and redefine the versatility of traditional academic building design in a way that would better support Pennington’s contemporary school pedagogies and interactive student experience. Throughout the building, the theme continues: every space works to capture the most potential for collegiality, student-teacher interaction, and cross-pollination between disciplines, resulting in a collaborative and supportive environment for the entire school community.

The renovation rethinks what a university library can be in an era when book reference and individual research have given way to digital learning, hands-on making, and transdisciplinary exploration. Gone are the carrels and the stacks, replaced with tech-integrated conference spaces, collaboration classrooms with moveable furniture and boards, and a digital fabrication lab equipped with modeling tools and 3D printers.

Millbrook School wanted a student center with a design that was open, attractive, subtly monitored with an appropriate mix of functions: a place that felt safe and owned by all the students. Removing a section of the second floor connected the interior spaces visually and spatially. The snack bar seating area is open to the game/lounge area on the second floor with soaring ceilings and the hominess of the exposed heavy timbers.

Together with Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, we worked through a series of options to create a contextually sensitive addition that would connect two historic campus buildings. The final approach combines both traditional and contemporary elements to create architecture with a true sense of place.

The owners of this historic Mellor, Meigs & Howe house in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia acquired neighboring parcels of land over time with the goal of transforming this open space into their ideal retreat. VMA worked with the owner and a team of consultants to design a series of sweeping terraces, easing the change in grade, terminating in a generous pool seemingly dropping off into the distance beyond.

When they began thinking about the design of their new home, our clients took inspiration from their stunning seven-acre site in the Philadelphia suburbs that offered long views across the Schuylkill valley on a secluded private road. Our design response was to site the new house oriented towards the views and the sun, with the massing framing a swooping pool with a long porch roof.

The new Mills Racquet Center at Millbrook School combines squash, tennis and a platform tennis court. Their total number of courts were doubled and the viewing balcony was extended. The communal area was designed carefully to be shaded along with the courts location to protect from glare during play. Specialty glass, interior shades, and exterior sunshades were all used to protect the space. The large gathering space offers expansive views south towards the tennis courts and playing fields, creating an important visual connection.

The Philadelphia Youth Basketball Center is important in how it connects youths through basketball as well as help build life skills. This center needed a new home in order to support their wide range of programs. After years spent studying options and developing concepts for different sites, we have been able to bring their vision to life. With basketball at its core, the center also has classrooms, spaces equipped to foster civic dialogue, and on-site financial planning services. The new design will allow PYB to serve seven times as many young people as they are now along with new employment opportunities to surrounding residents.
