Belcher East Student Housing
The Hotchkiss School | Lakeville, Connecticut
This project studied the feasibility of solving the short term goal of housing students while a dorm was being constructed and addressing the long term need of increased faculty housing appropriate for young families and empty-nesters. We proposed adding two triple unit structures and the renovations of an existing building to an area of campus already dedicated to faculty housing. Each of the triples would house one faculty family and 14 students. When the student housing was no longer needed their areas converted easily into two faculty units. This same concept held for the renovated structure.
Each of the apartments has its own entry, porch, garden area, gracious kitchen-dining room, a large living room, two bedrooms, and a study. The scale and details were carefully studied to support the character and grace of the Belcher East Estate main house. One building was sited to form a semicircular grouping with two large houses built in the 1990’s. The siting of the second building formed a pleasant rectangular lawn in conversation with the former stables and another outbuilding slated for renovations.
