Campus Planning & Design
Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church | Bryn Mawr, PA
Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church is a proud steward of its historic campus, comprising four distinct main buildings (Sanctuary, Chapel, Education Building, Ministry Center), but felt that their facilities could better support their active and growing congregation. A collaborative planning process led to a final study that established a conceptual direction for campus improvements and helped communicate this vision to the congregation and community at large.
The existing buildings were evaluated, including not just their systems and fabric but their accessibility and spatial utilization. The results helped inform discussion during a series of meetings with members of the congregation to identify the challenges most impacting their engagement with the church. A clear goal emerged: to make their campus more welcoming and accessible to all. This was particularly important for the historic Education Building, home of their thriving pre-school program.
We developed design solutions that could achieve multiple goals at once. Replacing the porte cochere that connects the Sanctuary and Ministry Center with a new enclosed space, dubbed “The Atrium,” would create a fully accessible path between buildings while providing a prominent front door to guide visitors and a place to host casual post-service gatherings, catching people as they leave. The Education Building would be expanded and renovated to improve classroom quality, increase accessibility, and create a new indoor/outdoor play area. Additional proposed projects included new landscaping to better accommodate outdoor events, site improvements for safer vehicular and pedestrian circulation, and a new reflection garden in front of the Chapel.
The final report included detailed descriptions of each project along with conceptual renderings and MEP/structural narratives. It also captured the results of the visioning sessions we held with the congregation at the outset. After sharing the report with their congregation and discussing it internally, the church ultimately decided to move forward immediately with the recently completed Education Building improvements. We are currently working on the next phase, improvements to the Ministries Center.
