Haws Memorial Chapel
Saint Thomas Church Whitemarsh | Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania
VMA had previously produced a comprehensive master plan for the 40-acre site of St. Thomas’ Church Whitemarsh, which proposed a sensitive expansion of their historic facilities. The first phase of the plan’s implementation involved a new chapel addition to the existing sanctuary that would also accommodate a meeting room and chorale suite to support their strong music program. The addition seamlessly integrates into the existing building in part because it is clad in the same distinctive red sandstone and slate roofing. Inside, hammer beam trusses recall the exposed truss structure of the main sanctuary. A stained glass rose window, which had long slept in storage, was restored and installed in the east wall gable.
