Abington Campus The Intersection Student Lounge
The Pennsylvania State University | Abington, Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania State University Abington Campus sought to improve their existing student lounge, The Intersection, as a short-term solution while they evaluated the feasibility of constructing a new, larger Student Union. The proposal was crucial to the university as it is the only space on campus dedicated solely to student activities, including a performance venue, student lounge, and informal meeting space.
VMA’s design had to overcome the challenges of a low ceiling, absence of exterior windows, and an overall inefficient configuration.
Our design approach began with the creation of full-height windows through both the corridor and the building exterior. Brightly-colored furniture and finishes further enliven the space, while a new ceiling and light fixtures provide more even light distribution. Fixed furniture along the perimeter creates well-defined activity spaces. Easily moveable furniture elsewhere provides a necessary degree of flexibility. Simple but comprehensive AV capabilities let students switch easily from watching a movie to listening to a live coffeehouse style acoustic performance.
