Campus Athletics Plan
The Gunnery | Washington, Connecticut
Proud of their strong athletics program that was vital to their boarding school community, The Frederick Gunn School (Formerly The Gunnery) nevertheless felt their athletic facilities no longer fully supported this part of their mission. VMA developed a targeted plan for improvements within the very constrained footprint of the site. The grounds were complicated by centrally located tennis courts which are shared with a tennis club and a natural grass field recently reconstructed over a septic field, and a significant slope which requires retaining walls and steps. An historic set of bleachers built into the grade sits on axis with the football field.
We proposed a four-phase plan to guide improvements step-by-step, carefully articulating field use schedules for each season for all varsity teams, potentially moving the tennis courts, shared with a local private club, to an alternate site. The final plan also showed the proposed site for a new athletics center, an expanded and improved parking lot, and improvements to their hockey rink. The results were folded into a comprehensive campus plan that followed this original study.
