Anthony House
Millbrook School | Millbrook, New York
Millbrook School has maintained a deliberately delicate scale on its rural campus. Anthony House, a center for alumni relations and development, sits comfortably within its context as the design draws from the other buildings around Pulling Circle in material, scale, and details. It looks and feels like a well-established part of the campus fabric – just as the school intended.
The almost perfectly cubic, two-story building is traditionally detailed with a symmetrical brick facade, quoining, and rowlock base. A brick belt course accents the second-floor windowsills and a classical Georgian cornice, terminates the facade and graciously supports the slate hip roof. A formal extension on the garden facade creates a connection between the primary reception room on the first floor and a stone terrace. The rear terrace with its beautiful views expands the building for meetings and events in nice weather.
The interior is organized around an intimately scaled double-height atrium, illuminated by a large skylight. The reception room, on axis with the entrance, is furnished like a beautiful informal living room. The finishes balance the durability requirements of institutional use with the residential experience Millbrook wanted to evoke. Alumni can relax among the comfortable soft seating, or they can use the adjacent office as a touchdown space. On the second floor, offices are arranged around the interior balcony in the atrium which makes for a collegial atmosphere. There is a conference room and a staff kitchenette that helps support catering for meetings and events.
