Mills Racquet Center
Millbrook School | Millbrook, New York
A new center for squash, tennis, and platform tennis was part of a planned investment by Millbrook School in their student life facilities, enabling the school to meet existing demand and support future enrollment growth.
VMA designed an addition to the existing racquet center that would not only double the total number of squash courts, from four to eight, but would establish a connection between the racquet sports and spaces dedicated to other teams and general athletics.
As part of the addition, VMA extended the viewing balcony and created a team room and racquets’ director’s office. The gathering area is carefully shaded to protect the courts from glare. Specialty glass, interior shades, and exterior sun shades also protect the space. Oversized fans help with conditioning the space to force hot air downward in cold seasons and exhaust the hot air up and out during the summer. The addition offers expansive views south toward the tennis courts and playing fields, the only place in their existing athletic center where this visual connection is so celebrated. Lastly, a long flagstone terrace was constructed to provide a place to watch tennis matches.
