Mills Racquet Center
Millbrook School | Millbrook, New York
This center combines squash, tennis and a proposed platform tennis court. The school had four squash courts and needed four more. The addition creates a large gathering space that offers expansive views south towards the tennis courts and playing fields. It is the only place in the athletic center that this visual connection is so celebrated. A long flagged terrace was constructed as part of this project to provide a place to watch tennis matches.
Four new squash courts were added, and the viewing balcony was extended. A team room, an racquets director’s office fill out the program. The gathering area is carefully shaded and the light to protect the courts from glare. Specialty glass, interior shades, and exterior sunshades protect the space. Oversized fans help with conditioning the space to force the hot air downward in the cold seasons and exhaust the hot air up and out during the summer months.
