Moravian Academy | Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Moravian Academy wanted to understand how best to incorporate a new middle school, improved athletics facilities, and a new field house on one of their two distinct independent school campuses in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Together with Andropogon Landscape Architects and DesignLab, our team developed a comprehensive plan that provided a cohesive approach to their phased completion.
The new middle school building was sited in such a way to create distinct play spaces for each age group and form its own precinct distinct from the upper school buildings. The massing, though contemporary in its expression, relates well to the more historic existing buildings. The field house was sited across from the campus ring road between two proposed athletic fields with convenient parking. The concept for the athletic facility was to form a destination at the north side of campus and to create a strong presence along the adjacent highway.
Great care was taken to keep pedestrian zones free from cars. We carefully planned for a safe pick-up and drop-off area for the middle school while also providing convenient and direct vehicular access to the athletic facilities.
