North Fields
Millbrook School | Millbrook, New York
Millbrook School needed three new playing fields to accommodate all their teams and to support growing enrollment, part of a larger investment in their student life facilities. Adequate fields would allow all teams to compete and practice without compromising student schedules.
Millbrook is blessed with abundant farmland into which it could readily expand. VMA’s design needed to maintain the visual character of campus, celebrate the school’s natural beauty, and blend unobtrusively into the natural pastoral landscape in a way that would be considerate of adjacent neighbors.
To do this, we created two distinct levels for the fields linked by a gentle slope, positioned with gorgeous views of the surrounding hillsides. The slope serves as natural bleachers. The fields were constructed with substantial drainage and crowns to assist with runoff. Scoreboards were tucked into the landscape. A long equipment storage shed was painted dark green against a stand of white pines to reduce visual impact. A new service road, which includes parking for referees, provides reliable emergency access.
