Society Hill Townhouse Expansion
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
A client sought to combine two historic townhouses in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia into a single house that reflected their contemporary aesthetic.
VMA collaborated with the homeowner and their interior designer, Fury Design, on the overall design of the townhouse, and took the lead overseeing the preservation work and the necessary construction documentation, as the house sits within a registered historic district.
Heavily altered street facades were meticulously reconstructed to recapture their original elegance while subtly indicating their combined nature inside. Victoria Steiger, landscape architect, complemented the architecture with a series of fountains and hardscape designed to ensure cohesion of the garden for an artistic, timeless feel. In addition to the garden, the project included establishing a guest suite in the rear garage.
