Wellness Center
St. George's School | Middletown, Rhode Island
St George’s weight and fitness rooms were located in windowless former wrestling room, with trainer’s services similarly hidden from the normal movement of student athletes. As a result, students weren’t taking advantage of the trainer’s services, and the weight room was perceived as an unpleasant place that discouraged visitors. The athletic trainer was unable to both see what was happening in the games and help the students with normal pre-game activities like taping and stretching. The school requested a relocation of these spaces to the ground floor, close to the main movement of students, and the strongest possible connection to the outdoors, most especially a view of the turf field, their most intensely used outdoor athletic space. This allows the trainer to see directly to the fields, students to easily stop in for assistance, and injured students to be easily brought for treatment.
A short indoor training-track is integrated, along with both weight and fitness equipment. The principal donor had envisioned being able to watch a football game from the treadmill, and the design, a very large curtainwall, and the roof sloped to direct the eye out to the field, are all intended to emphasize the connection to the outdoors, making the space feel more inviting and encouraging students to use the space during unprogrammed times. The extremely simple construction, with exposed CMU walls, is dressed up with a stained and honed finish, durable and economical.
