Campus Planning

The Hill School | Pottstown, PA

The Hill School wanted a comprehensive campus plan that addressed their anticipated facilities needs over the next ten years. Working closely with the school’s leadership and other members of their community, we identified forty projects to be completed in several phases.

The entry sequence, circulation and reinforcement of the pedestrian core was one major organizing component of the plan. To give the campus identity and clear edges, we suggested a strong landscaped property line reinforced with a low fence. Expanding the academic facilities in the center of the core campus around pedestrian-only quads was suggested, which would create clear zones of use on the campus with perimeter vehicular circulation and parking. The indoor athletic facilities were also earmarked for expansion along with new turf fields, a reorientation of the baseball field, construction of a new football stadium, a tailgate pavilion, and a stronger connection and access to their golf course. A shortage of faculty housing was another key issue; we proposed an expansion of their core campus to provide for new housing as well as renovations to on-dorm faculty housing.

The school has already begun embarking on some of the projects proposed. Given the long-term nature of the plan, however, it was designed with deliberate flexibility to allow the school to respond to future changes in their needs or priorities.
