Upper School Gymnasium
Wilmington Friends School | Wilmington, Delaware
After a fire burned through their Upper School auditorium, ruining that space as well as their gymnasium, we worked with Wilmington Friends School to expedite the design and construction of their new facilities.
The gymnasium sustained irrevocable water damage during the efforts to suppress the fire. In addition to rebuilding the space, our project added elevator access, a new ADA restroom, air conditioning, and five new south-facing windows, transforming what was a dark damp basement space into a clean, bright accessible gymnasium. New roll-away bleachers seat 200 spectators and several new storage seats accommodate the year-round competitions, practices, and training camps that utilize the space.
The new performing arts center situated directly above the gym. The new day-lit entry atrium connects the gym and theatre to the rest of campus and provides a new front door to welcome the whole community to the school’s public functions. The space was reclaimed from a narrow exterior entry court left over between two buildings and includes a grand stair and multipurpose meeting room. Lighting and acoustic treatments make the space inviting throughout the day.
Construction was completed two years post-fire, and yet the project was still able to achieve LEED Gold Certification.
